Thoughts on Community Development
We are all able to be a part of the change, to make this country and this world a place that we are proud of and a place that allows us to believe future generations will be proud of us. Change does not happen because of other people – change happens because one by one we all choose to be a part of this positive change.
There are those that will be cynical and those that will turn a blind eye, but how is this going to change our world? Be the change you want to see in the world. Contribute in your own way to make a positive change in the life of someone else in a less fortunate position – it is contagious and it is addictive – how can this possibly not be a good thing for us?!
Companies have the opportunity to use their business skills and their workforce to make significant contributions. Companies should not feel they have to do this, but rather that it is part of what they feel they should be doing and this is the culture they are passing on to their employees. Again, how can this not be a good thing?
Corporate social responsibility is a way for companies to have a positive impact on the communities around them by contributing to positive change. Corporate Social Responsibility has also come a long way from the 'feel good' factor of just handing over a cheque by the Board of Directors. Corporate Social Responsibility is about being involved in the change and being constructive in the contribution. It is not a matter of just giving for the sake of giving, but rather giving with a sense of purpose, and giving in order to be part of the change that we all so desperately want to see in this world of ours.
Mahatma Ghandi was right – you need to be part of the change you wish to see in this world. What are you waiting for? Who are you waiting for?
